As focal points of Beckleys lovely New River Park, the Exhibition Coal Mine, the Rahall Company Store, Mine Museum and the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia draw thousands of people to the area annually.
This mine, and subsequent additional mines opened later on in what became known as the Pocahontas Coal Fields, were among the first large-scale mining operations in what became the Appalachian coal fields, and paved the way for the massive coal mining efforts that developed in this part of Virginia and West Virginia over the last 100 years.
The coal mine tour was very interesting. The tickets were discounted to $14 instead of $20 each because we stayed at the campground. It was a short walk from our camp site to the tour and we never had to disconnect our 5th wheel. The toll from Beckley to Charleston on I-64 was only $5.00 for our truck and 5th wheel.

We discovered it about five years ago and have returned many times since on our way to and from points east.
